Description
If you notice a leak between the gearbox and the engine, you can determine whether it is motor oil or gearbox oil based on the smell. In both cases, you will have to disassemble the engine and if it is gearbox oil, replace the primary shaft oil seal.
If gearbox oil is leaking, replace the primary shaft oil seal. Do not delay this task. Prolonged leaking can cause the gearbox mount rubbers to soften, leading to higher costs. Prevention is better than cure.
If motor oil is leaking, replace the crankshaft seal (behind the flywheel). It is also advisable to replace the flywheel seal while the engine is disassembled.
After replacement, check the oil in the gearbox by removing the plug on the left side. The oil should now drip out slightly, or top up to the edge with the correct oil.
