Description

The cooling of the air-cooled engine must not be obstructed in any way. Despite the fact that the engine compartment is usually sealed, it is common for a loose piece of engine insulation to get sucked against the cooling house, resulting in severe engine damage. Over the years, we have pulled all sorts of things out of the cooling fan, with a lost cleaning cloth being the number one culprit. To prevent this from ever happening, the type 1 engine equipped with a cooling house without an external oil cooler box (or the engines with single intake) can be fitted with an additional fan guard that is mounted with a clamp on the rear of the cooling house. This fan guard is essential, especially for trikes (where the engine compartment is not sealed), as the risk of unwanted parts being sucked into the cooling house while driving is higher than you think. In the development of the type 4 engine, Volkswagen has equipped the fan with a guard by default to protect the engine and the mechanic’s fingers. Many type 4 engines have had this guard deformed or removed over the years. Our advice: ensure good protection and install a new fan guard. The fan guard for the type 1 engine is completely chrome-plated so that when the rear of the engine is visible, it contributes to a nicely finished engine. For type 4 engines, the guard is identical to the original, made of black plastic.

Chrome fits on: Type-1 engines 8.1964 to 7.1970 (except 30hp engines)

Black fits on: Type-4 engines
