Volkswagen quickly realized that replacing a pushrod tube is a labor-intensive task. To speed up this process, spring-adjustable pushrod tubes have been developed, allowing the pushrod tubes to be replaced without having to remove the engine. Remove the valve cover and rocker arm shaft, take out the pushrods from the tubes, and, from the underside, pull the tubes out from between the crankcase and cylinder head. Now, install the spring-adjustable pushrod tubes by sliding them in and releasing them between the crankcase and the cylinder head. You now have a leak-free connection without having to remove the engine from the car.

The spring-adjustable pushrod tubes mentioned here are an evolved Volkswagen model. For type 1 and type 3 engines, the tubes are standard equipped with a longer section on the crankcase side (windage) which ensures that during fast corners, the oil stays in the crankcase and is not scooped up by the pushrod tubes. The model for CT/CZ and WBX engines does not have this additional feature, but it is still improved compared to the original. Unique to these tubes, the seal between the two parts is provided by three successive sealing rings, while most tubes only have two, and original VW ones have only one. An additional benefit of these tubes is that they can also be used for type 1 and type 3 engines with high valve lift. The cylinder head side has a larger diameter than the crankcase side, providing enough room for the pushrods. Both types are sold in sets of 8, including gaskets. They are made of aluminum, which not only improves the underside but also directly addresses the rust issue. Whether it’s about replacing pushrod tubes in an installed engine to save time, a solution for tuned engines, or an improvement over the original, choosing these spring-adjustable pushrod tubes is a very good decision.
