Description
When installing disc brakes on both the front and rear sides, the standard master cylinder will need to be replaced with a larger one that can displace more fluid.
The standard cylinder diameter in the master cylinder for Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia in a single working brake system is, depending on the year of construction, 17.46 mm or 19.05 mm, and in the double working system, 19.05 mm.
Larger master cylinders have a cylinder of 22.2 mm for the single working brake system and 20.6 mm for the separated brake system. This displaces more fluid, resulting in equal force over a larger area, which is necessary for the 4 brake calipers.
Master cylinder for a separated brake system
This is intended if your Beetle or Karmann Ghia uses disc brakes on both the front and rear sides but can also be installed without problems in an existing brake system, regardless of whether it is discs or drum brakes. The master cylinder has connections for two brake pressure switches. If your old master cylinder is equipped with one brake pressure switch, you can close one hole with a blind plug or a second brake light switch that you do not further connect. When using two brake pressure switches, you can connect a warning light that will illuminate in case of pressure difference between the two circuits, in this case use the 3-pole switches.
